Macintosh Specs History

Released proudly in January 1984, the Macintosh was the first affordable desktop with a Graphical User Interface. Driven by the brand new Motorola 68000 chip, it was significantly faster than its predecessors, running at 8 MHz. Packaged in a compact beige enclosure with a built-in black and white monitor, it included a keyboard, mouse, and a 400 KB 3.5-inch floppy drive – a first for any personal computer. Its initial price was $2,495.

Launched in September 1984, the Mac 512K was an upgrade to the Mac 128K, increasing RAM by 384 KB to 512 KB, priced at $3,195. In April 1986, the 512Ke was introduced featuring an 800 KB floppy drive and 128K ROM, maintaining early specs, priced at $1,999; education markets sold this as the Mac ED. The 512Ke was discontinued in September 1987.

The Macintosh XL was a rebranded Apple Lisa running MacWorks XL for Mac emulation, fitted with a 400K 3.5-inch floppy drive and internal 10 MB Widget disk driven by a 5 MHz 68000 CPU.

Released alongside the Mac II in March 1987, the SE answered expansion concerns with standard ADB connectivity supporting up to 16 input devices. Priced from $2,898.

The Mac II was the ultimate expandable Mac back then. Based on the 68020 processor, it was the first 32-bit Mac. Fitted with 6 NuBus slots, it supported extensive expansions. Priced from $3,898.

The Mac IIx was essentially identical to the Mac II, but driven by a 68030 processor and 68882 FPU (the first Mac to feature both). Priced at $7,769.

The SE/30 was essentially a Mac IIx in an SE layout chassis, replacing the second floppy setup with internal disks. Priced at $4,369.

Released in 1989, the IIcx was a compact version of the IIx, offering identical performance but running quieter. Designated 'c' for compact and 'x' for 68030 processor. It was the first Mac design allowed to lay flat or stand tall (one of the earliest mini-tower styles). Users loved its screwless modular layout component snaps.

The Mac IIci was a faster version of the IIcx and one of the most popular Macs in history. First to include built-in color video circuitry and a 32-bit clean ROM. Priced at $6,700.

The Mac IIfx was the fastest Mac of its time, dubbed 'Wicked Fast' by media. Utilized custom ASICs for speed. Priced from $9,000 to $11,000 depending on configuration.

Released on October 15, 1990, the Macintosh Classic was the first Apple Macintosh priced under $1,000. Inspired by the success of the Plus and SE, its system specs mirrored its predecessors, utilizing the same 9-inch monochrome CRT display, 512x342 res, and 4 MB memory limit. Apple decided not to upgrade the CPU or RAM to ensure compatibility and low cost. Compared to the Plus, the Classic was up to 25% faster and standard with an Apple SuperDrive 3.5-inch floppy drive, housed in the 1984 Macintosh 128K industrial design. Reviewers were mixed, primarily criticizing its slow processor and lack of expansion slots. It found popularity in education due to its low price and rich educational titles. It was sold alongside the more powerful Classic II in 1991 until being discontinued the following year.

The Mac LC, named for low cost, targeted the home market with a 16 MHz 68020 processor. It featured a compact chassis and was among the first Macs to bundle a microphone. Priced at $2,400.

The IIsi features a sleek chassis designed exclusively for this model. Originally designed for a 25 MHz 68030, it shipped at 20 MHz to avoid competing with the IIci. Equipped with a microphone, priced at $3,800.

The Classic II was what the original Classic truly should have been. It featured a redesigned chassis, a 16 MHz 68030 processor, and for the first time, a built-in microphone. Priced at $1,900, and discontinued in September 1993.

The Quadra 700 packed a 25 MHz 68040 including an integrated FPU. It was the first Quadra and first Macintosh to accommodate a tower orientation layout setup. Priced at $6,000.

The Quadra 900 was sold from Oct 1991 to May 1992, releasing alongside the 700 with high expandability for scientists/designers. Armed with 5x NuBus slots and 25 MHz speeds, it introduced a 3-mode front lock. Priced at $7,200.

The LC II was essentially an upgrade to the original LC. Standardized on a 16 MHz 68030 processor, retaining its 16-bit path, making speed improvements negligible. Priced at $1,240, becoming one of the most affordable Macs.

The Quadra 950 replaced the 900 with a 33 MHz clock catering to higher RAM capacities and supporting 6 NuBus expansion slots, durable in server scopes. Last of the 68K holdovers, discontinued in October 1995.

The IIvi, launched in October 1992, was identical to the IIvx but with a 16 MHz 68030 processor and no FPU. Sold for only 4 months before being discontinued, making it one of the shortest-lived models in Apple history.

The IIvx targeted the mid-range market. It introduced a new chassis design (the first to consider a built-in CD-ROM) with a 32 MHz 68030 processor and 68882 FPU. Priced at $2,950.

The Color Classic is identical to the Classic II, except it includes a color screen, larger ROM, and a redesigned chassis. Priced at $1,390.

The LC III was sold from Feb 1993 to Feb 1994, replacing the LC II with significant performance boosts according to MacWorld benchmarks. Priced at $1,349; education markets sold this as the Performa 450.

The Centris 610 was among the first sub-midrange machines to support the 68040 processor and the first to introduce the now familiar low-profile desktop enclosure for Macs. Renamed Quadra 610 in October 1993 with a 25 MHz full 68040 processor. The Centris/Quadra 610 was priced at $2,520.

The Centris 650 was a faster, more expandable version of the 610, utilizing an IIvx-style chassis and housing a 25 MHz 68040 processor. Renamed Quadra 650 in October 1993 with a speed boost to 33 MHz. Priced at $2,700, and discontinued in September 1994.

The Quadra 800 matched the 950's performance at almost half the initial price, utilizing a brand new mini-tower layout design for a 33 MHz 68040 processor. Priced at $4,700.

Announced as Centris 660AV, later Quadra 660AV. Armed with custom S-video and composite IO setups, becoming an affordable AV rig fitted with 55 MHz 3210 DSP circuits.

The Quadra 840AV broke the 33 MHz speeds via a 40 MHz 68040 processor leveraging custom AV GeoPort circuitries, making it the highest speed low-priced configuration of its era. Priced at $3,550.

The LC 520 was Apple’s attempt at an all-in-one computer for the 90s, featuring an attractive brand-new all-in-one chassis. Priced at $2,000, it became a popular home model.

The Color Classic II, exclusive to Japan, bumped processor speeds and data path to 33 MHz and 32-bit respectively over its predecessor.

The Macintosh TV was Apple’s first attempt at integrating computers with television. Housed in a black chassis, fitted with a 14-inch Sony Trinitron CRT, and compatible with Sony TVs via dedicated remote controllers. Production was limited to 10,000 units.

The last Quadra 630 hybrid leveraged both Quadra and LC platforms with built-in IDE support (first inside a Mac), with versatile Performa bundle listings. Priced at $1,200.

The LC 580 doubled VRAM to 1 MB and added a video in/out slot over the LC 575, similar to standard options in the short-lived Mac TV. Discontinued after one year.
