Power Macintosh Specs History

The TAM (Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh) was a futuristic all-in-one with a Bose sound system and active-matrix LCD. While initially priced at $9,000+, its high price led to a legendary fire-sale price of $1,999 before its discontinuation.

The 9600 introduced a new tower design with easy internal access. Initially featuring dual 604e processors, it later received 'Mach 5' updates up to 350 MHz. Despite the launch of the faster G3, the 9600 remained a top choice for pros due to its superior expansion (6 PCI slots).

The 8600 featured the new easy-access tower design. It was the first PowerMac with a standard internal Zip drive and included video I/O. Later boosted to 300 MHz, it served as a robust mid-range workstation.

The 6500 reached a milestone as the first 300 MHz personal computer. Using the 'InstaTower' design, higher-end models included video capture hardware and Zip drives.

The 7300 replaced the 7200 and 7600. Powered by 180 or 200 MHz 604e processors on removable daughtercards, it retained the 7600's memory interleaving but dropped the video input. Prices ranged from $1,700 to $2,300.

The 5500 improved on the 5400 with better graphics acceleration and AV features. Initially sold to schools for $1,999, it featured 16-bit audio I/O.

Sold as the 7220 in some markets, the 4400 used industry-standard components for lower cost. It was available with a 200 MHz 603e and an optional DOS card with a Cyrix processor.

The Performa 6400 was Apple's first consumer-targeted mid-range tower. Known as 'InstaTower', it featured 180-200 MHz processors and built-in video out. It was later rebranded as a Power Macintosh for schools.

The Power Mac 6300 was exclusive to Asia, while its consumer twin, the Performa 6300, was sold in North America.

The 8200 was a tower-case version of the 7200 with identical specifications, sold exclusively in Europe.

The 7600 was a faster sibling to the 7500, peaking at 132-200 MHz before being replaced by the 7300.

The PowerMac 5400 LC, launched in April 1996, featured a 120 MHz 603e processor. It was the first LC with DIMM slots and industry-standard PCI slots. It received speed boosts up to 200 MHz in 1997 and was also sold under the Performa 5400 label. A rare black Performa 5420 was released in non-US markets.

The 5260 replaced the 5200 LC, pivoting from the 'LC' brand to 'Power Macintosh'. Aimed at education, it featured a 603e chip before being succeeded by the 5500.

The 7200 introduced PCI slots to the entry-level lineup. Available in 75-120 MHz configurations, it also offered a 'PC Compatible' model with a Pentium chip.

The 7500 featured a modular case and a 100 MHz 601 chip on a daughtercard. It included composite and S-video inputs and retailed for $2,700.

The PowerMac 5300 LC, introduced in August 1995, shared the 5200's looks but boosted performance with a 100 MHz 603e chip and 16 MB RAM. It was also sold as the Performa 5300/5320CD until its discontinuation in April 1996.

The 9500 was the first PCI-based Mac flagship. Featuring a tower case with 7 drive bays and 6 PCI slots, it skipped onboard video to allow pro GPU cards. Its processor sat on a swappable daughtercard for easy upgrades.

The 5200 LC, launched in April 1995, was the first LC model with a PowerPC chip. Initially targeting education, it featured a 75 MHz 603 processor in a redesigned LC 550 case. Priced at $2,000, it was replaced by the 5260 in April 1996. It also appeared in the Performa 5200 series with various configurations.

The 8100 was the high-end flagship of the first PowerPC generation. Offering superior expansion, it reached speeds of 110 MHz for $4,250.

The 7100 offered more expansion than the 6100 in an IIvx-style case. It saw speed increases up to 80 MHz and launched at $2,900.

The 6100 was the entry-level First-Gen PowerMac. It launched the transition to PowerPC alongside the 7100 and 8100. A notable variant was the 'DOS Compatible' model with an Intel 486 chip on a PDS card. It famously featured a boot chime played by guitarist Stanley Jordan.
