Quietly released in the summer of 1997, the PowerBook 2400 was Apple's first subnotebook since the Duo 2300, co-designed with IBM. This model omitted an internal floppy or CD-ROM drive but retained most flagship notebook feature while weighing only 4.4 pounds. Its compact design made it a perfect mix of portability and power. A 240 MHz version (codenamed "Mighty Cat") was sold only in Japan.

Announced in February 1997, the PowerBook 3400 was the world's fastest notebook at the time. Apple hoped this PCI-based design would revive its notebook market share. It featured expansion bays compatible with the 5300 and was the first PowerBook with a 1MB IrDA infrared standard. Prices ranged from $4,500 for a 180 MHz base to $6,500 for a 240 MHz version (which shipped months later).

Released in October 1996, the PowerBook 1400cs partially addressed recent quality issues. Powered by the same 117 MHz 603e processor as the 5300, it introduced an internal 6x CD-ROM. Its sleep-swappable bay supported various drives like MO and Zip. It debuted stackable RAM modules (a PowerBook first) up to 64MB, internal expansion slots for video out or Ethernet, and PC card slots supporting two Type II or one Type III.

Introduced in August 1995, the PowerBook 5300 was the first PowerBook to use a PowerPC processor and to feature a sleep-swappable expansion bay. It offered various screen configs and two RAM/HDD options (8/500 or 16/750). However, it suffered from severe hardware reliability issues (DOA), making it a symbol of Apple's mid-90s quality woes. Features included an IR transceiver; the 100 MHz 8/500 was $2,300.

Configs were 8/500 ($3,900) and 16/750 ($4,700). While the high-quality screen was a plus, hardware reliability and DOA rates still dampened the user experience.

It had a swappable bay and IR module for wireless networking. Like the rest of the line, reliability setbacks and DOA issues made it emblematic of Apple's QA problems.

Released in July 1994, the PowerBook 150 was the last 100 series model in the original case and the most affordable consumer model ($1,450-$1,600). It boosted CPU speed by 8MHz over the 145B but removed the ADB port and used a budget passive-matrix screen without external video support. Like older models, it had just one serial port but support for third-party modems. Resolution rose to 640x480. While looking like a 140, its logic board matched the Duo 230. It broke the 14MB RAM barrier for the 100 series, debuted a lithium-ion backup battery for RAM preservation, and was the first Mac using cheaper IDE drives. It was the last model with a trackball and lacked SCSI disk mode.
